Reactive Test Strategy

A reactive test strategy is a testing approach in which test design and execution adapt continuously based on information gathered during testing.

Official definition
ISTQB Official Glossary Definition

What is Reactive Test Strategy?

Rather than following a completely predefined plan, testers adjust priorities according to discovered defects, risks, and observed system behavior.

Adaptive planning: Test activities evolve during execution.

Risk focused: New findings influence testing priorities.

Flexible approach: Supports rapidly changing projects.

Real World Example

A team inherits a legacy inventory module with almost no documentation and is asked to test an emergency patch with two days' notice.

There is no time, and no real information, to write a detailed test plan derived from formal requirements — the requirements were never properly written down in the first place.

Instead of forcing an upfront, document-driven plan that the team cannot actually produce, the testers use a Reactive test strategy: they run exploratory sessions against the live patched system, and what they discover shapes what they test next — a broken save button leads them to dig into the entire order-save workflow rather than stopping at the one button.

Within the two-day window, the team finds critical defects that an analytical, requirements-first strategy would have missed entirely, simply because there were no requirements to analyze — reacting to the actual system was the only strategy that fit the situation.

Practice Questions

Question 1

A test team has no formal requirements for a legacy module and only two days before an emergency release. They decide to explore the running application, letting what they discover shape what they test next. Which test strategy are they using?

Question 2

Which statement BEST distinguishes a reactive test strategy from an analytical test strategy?
