Test Plan
A test plan is a document that describes the scope, objectives, approach, resources, schedule, and activities for planned testing.

It serves as the primary planning document that guides testing throughout the project lifecycle.
Planning document: Defines how testing will be performed.
Resource allocation: Identifies people, tools, and environments.
Project control: Provides a baseline for monitoring progress.
Real World Example
A mid-size company kicks off testing for a new insurance claims platform, and different people assume different things: one thinks there are three weeks for testing, another thinks two, and nobody agrees on which environments are available when.
Without a documented Test plan, coordinating testing across multiple people becomes guesswork — when the release date suddenly moves up, nobody has a shared document showing what can still realistically be achieved and what has to be cut.
The test manager writes an actual Test plan: the specific objectives, the schedule of which weeks cover which activities and by whom, the environments and their availability windows, and the entry/exit criteria defining when testing is sufficient.
When the release date moves up, the team pulls up the documented Test plan and immediately shows stakeholders which objectives will still be covered and which need descoping — a fast, defensible conversation that would have been an unproductive argument without a shared document to point to.
