Smart Goal Methodology
The SMART goal methodology is a framework for defining goals that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

SMART goals improve planning and performance by ensuring objectives are clear, realistic, and measurable.
Specific: Goals clearly define the intended outcome.
Measurable: Progress can be objectively tracked.
Time-bound: Completion deadlines are established.
Real World Example
A test manager sets a quarterly quality objective and first writes it as "improve defect detection this quarter."
Nobody can act on that goal or verify it was met — it doesn't say by how much, isn't measurable against any baseline, and has no deadline attached.
Applying the Smart goal methodology, the test manager rewrites it: reduce production-escaped defects by 25% versus last quarter, by improving regression coverage on the three most defect-prone modules, supporting the company's Q3 reliability initiative, by the end of Q3.
Because the rewritten goal is specific and measurable, the team can track the actual escaped-defect count against the 25% target every sprint and know unambiguously by quarter-end whether it was achieved — something the original vague wording could never have confirmed either way.
