What is Session-based Test Management?

SBTM organizes exploratory testing into time-boxed sessions with defined charters, recorded observations, and measurable outcomes.

Time-boxed sessions: Testing occurs within planned time limits.

Session charters: Each session has a specific objective.

Documentation: Findings and activities are recorded for reporting.

Real World Example

A team runs unscripted exploratory testing on a new mobile app and finds good bugs, but nobody can tell management how much time was spent, what was actually covered, or whether testing was thorough enough to sign off the release.

Without any structure around the exploratory sessions, two testers might unknowingly cover the same screen twice while an entire feature goes untouched, and there is no record afterward to show what was or wasn't explored.

The team adopts Session-based test management: each session gets a written charter such as "explore the payment refund flow for edge cases," a fixed 60-minute timebox, and a structured debrief afterward capturing what was covered, bugs found, and areas left unexplored — all logged so coverage can be tracked like any other test metric.

At release time, the test lead shows management exactly which charters were completed, what was covered, and how much time was spent — turning "we did some exploratory testing" into auditable, reportable evidence that unmanaged exploratory sessions alone could never provide.

Practice Questions

Question 1

A team runs exploratory testing sessions with a written charter, a fixed 60-minute timebox, and a structured debrief afterward capturing coverage and bugs found. Which concept does this describe?

Question 2

What problem does session-based test management MOST directly solve compared to unmanaged, ad hoc exploratory testing?
