Remote test labs enable distributed teams to execute tests without being physically present at the testing facility.
Remote access: Devices are controlled over a network.
Shared resources: Multiple teams can use the same equipment.
Improved efficiency: Reduces travel and hardware duplication.
Real World Example
A team building a mobile banking app needs to verify behavior on 40 different physical Android and iOS device models, but can't justify buying and maintaining a device closet in-house.
Defects tied to specific hardware — a fingerprint sensor quirk on one Android model, a notch-related layout bug on a particular iPhone — don't show up in emulators, and physically shipping devices to a distributed team isn't practical.
The team uses a Remote test lab: a facility hosting the real physical devices, letting testers connect to and control them over the network from wherever they are, running both exploratory sessions and automated scripts against genuine hardware.
A tester connected to one specific Android model through the Remote test lab finds that fingerprint login silently fails on that device's sensor firmware — a hardware-specific defect an emulator would never reveal, found without the team ever buying or shipping that physical device.
