Field Testing
Field testing evaluates software in its intended operational environment under real-world conditions before or during deployment.

Unlike laboratory testing, field testing exposes the software to actual users, hardware, networks, and environmental conditions to identify practical issues.
Real environment: Software operates under realistic conditions.
User involvement: Actual users often participate in testing.
Validation: Confirms software performs as expected outside controlled environments.
Real World Example
A GPS-guided tractor autosteer feature passes every test on the manufacturer's flat, open test track.
Real farms have tree lines that block GPS signal, uneven and muddy terrain, and operators wearing gloves in bright sunlight — none of which the controlled track can reproduce.
The team performs Field testing by deploying units to a handful of working farms during actual planting season, monitoring GPS drift near tree cover and observing how real operators interact with the controls under real field conditions.
The autosteer is found to drift outside its tolerance whenever the tractor passes near tree lines — a defect that never appeared once on the test track, and exists precisely because Field testing evaluates the system in the real operational environment rather than a controlled substitute for it.
