What is Consultative Test Strategy?

Instead of relying mainly on risk analysis or formal standards, a consultative strategy uses the expertise of business specialists, developers, architects, or experienced testers to determine testing priorities.

Expert guidance: Decisions are influenced by knowledgeable stakeholders.

Collaborative planning: Test priorities are established through consultation.

Flexibility: The strategy adapts to project knowledge and business needs.

Real World Example

A test manager is assigned to a new internal payroll system but has no deep background in payroll compliance regulations.

Building the test strategy purely from the requirements document risks missing regulation-specific edge cases — like a withholding rule that only applies in one state — that never made it into the written requirements at all.

Following a Consultative test strategy, the test manager runs structured sessions with the payroll compliance officer and HR director, asking them directly which scenarios carry the most regulatory risk, and uses their answers to decide what the test approach should prioritize.

The compliance officer flags an obscure state-specific withholding rule that the requirements document never mentioned, and the resulting test case catches an under-withholding defect before the first live payroll run — a risk only a key stakeholder, not the documentation, could have surfaced.
